What is The Room Xchange?

The Room Xchange is Australia's first and only verified house-sharing platform where households (homeowners) and verified housemates (renters) can connect.

How does The Room Xchange work?

Households provide a room to rent and housemates can pay rent or offset part or all of the rent by offering to do additional help around the house such as cooking, cleaning or childcare. Have a play with our rent offset calculator and see what works best for you.

What's your points of difference?

That's an important question. We are NOT a flatmate/roommate type platform. We don't focus on shared houses where all the residents are co-renting in one house with a tenancy lease. Our housing supply is homeowners with a room to share which is very different to a traditional rental model. It's a civil agreement that we call a 'House-share Agreement.' This provides flexibility for all parties based on agreed terms and conditions.

Once you've registered and added your SMS verification code, you can then login and create your profile. Your profile must be 100% completed before you can connect with any users. This includes your Digital ID from Australia Post. This is a safety mechanism that ensures all users have been verified and are transparent in their approach.

Do I register as a household or a housemate?

If you are a homeowner with a room to rent, register as a household. If you are looking for a room to rent, register as a housemate. You must register as the correct user type as we can't simply change it. There are different requirements and questions for each user type. If you register as the incorrect user, we'll need to delete the account so you can begin as the correct user type.

Tell me about the Digital iD verification by Australia Post

All users of our platform must have a Digital iD by Australia Post creating a trusted and safe house-sharing community. When you register, you'll be asked for your D.O.B. Make sure it's exactly as it is on the government ID you'll use for your verification otherwise it won't pass. FYI - Australia Post does not hold this information. It's simply a cross-check against the information you have provided in your registration. This maintains the legitimacy of everyone in our community, it ensures there are no fake profiles and it gives you peace of mind knowing that whoever you connect with is verified too. Once your Digital iD is approved, you'll see a badge show up on your profile, letting people know you're verified. We also have SMS verification when first registering on our platform. 

Rent or rent offset

Do you want a traditional rental arrangement or do you want to take advantage of our unique Rent Offset option? Rent offset gives the household the option to offset part or all of the rent by requesting help around the house. The housemate can list on their profile if they're happy to offset their rent by showing the type of help they'd be happy to do. Feel free to take a look around. You don't need an account to search but if you want to connect with a user your profile needs to be 100% completed and verified. That's how we keep our community safe. Once you see someone you'd like to connect with, you'll automatically be asked to register and create a verified profile.

How much does it cost to use your service?

We are completely transparent about our pricing structure. You can find out everything you need to know on our services page. It's free to register, create your profile and search for users. No hidden catches! If you're confident to go through the entire process on your own, it's free to use. We do have digital resources you can purchase and you can hire our House-sharing Concierge who can hold your hand through the process.

Do you have a chatbot on your website?

We certainly do! In the bottom right-hand corner of the screen you'll see an orange circle with a chat symbol. We have utilised AI to create a thorough list of questions to help you through the process. Please use this before contacting us as we are very sure your question will be answered. However, if your question is unique, by all means, get in touch.

We do provide ongoing support in a couple of ways.

2) If you're a homeowner you can join our membership program (launching soon). One of the benefits is access to a private Facebook group for homeowners.
